Most of my students tend to get this phrase wrong and translate it to "stay with friends". it is really common in Spain to get together 2 or 3 times a week, go for tapas or simply enjoy a cup of coffee. The right way to say it using the verb hang out , or meet up with friends.
Let us see an example. "Last night I stayed with friends and had some tapas". This sounds more like you stayed in another place , like a hotel with friends. The right way to say it will be "Last night I hanged out/met up with friends and had some tapas".
